How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session
Your engagement session is such a special part of the wedding journey. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other, for you to get comfortable in front of the camera, and for you two to spend some intentional time together celebrating this season. It’s also a great way for you to get comfortable with my posing flow before the big day. I always tell my couples to think of their session as a fun date night that just happens to include photos.
Here are a few simple tips to help you feel prepared and relaxed for your engagement session.
1. Bring Comfortable Walking Shoes
Many locations require a little walking between spots, and some areas may have grass, gravel, or uneven ground. I always recommend bringing a pair of comfortable shoes to walk in and then changing into your photo shoes once we arrive at the location. It keeps things easy and stress-free.
2. Give Your Ring a Quick Clean
Your engagement ring will likely make a few appearances in your photos. Giving it a quick clean beforehand helps it sparkle beautifully in close-up shots.
3. Plan for Hair and Makeup Touch-Ups
If you’re planning to change outfits during your session, it’s helpful to bring a small bag with a few touch-up items like lipstick, powder, a hairbrush, or hairspray. A quick refresh can make a big difference between looks.
4. Consider Your Hair and Makeup Trial
Some brides like to schedule their hair and makeup trial on the same day as their engagement photos. This can be a great way to see exactly how your hair and makeup photograph and how everything will look on camera before the wedding day.
5. Outfit Planning
I could talk forever about outfit choices for photos, so I actually created a whole style guide to help couples put together their picture-perfect outfits! I’m always happy to send it over to help you plan looks that photograph beautifully.
6. Turn It Into a Date Night
One of my favorite tips is to plan something fun after your session—dinner, ice cream, coffee, or a walk somewhere you love. It keeps the excitement going and makes the whole evening feel even more special.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is simply to come ready to have fun together. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed, laughing, and enjoying each other. Your engagement session should feel natural, joyful, and a beautiful reflection of this season of your life.
I can’t wait to capture it for you!
